@MrEwanMorrison Supervisions are typically per course and per week. It's perfectly possible, depending on your college, that your supervisor may have a Nobel Prize, a Fields Medal or similar, so there really is no escape!

@SeanHoldenAI Yes, but what about the humanities? A field you don't work in. Ask your colleagues you might be alarmed at how many humanities students cheat with AI.

University education could be rendered obsolete by students cheating on their papers with AI. Soon students & fee paying parents will question why they have to pay for 4 years of education to get a degree when they can get AI to write a BA or masters paper for them in minutes.

@MrEwanMorrison I'm describing what in Cambridge is called the "supervision" system, and has been used here for ever. It's used by all subjects: write an essay on Joyce as an English undergraduate and you're going to be defending it in a supervision.

@MrEwanMorrison I suspect it's incredibly few. When a student produces a paper, it's not just marked and returned. They turn up to a group typically of one academic and two students and discuss it. If they've cheated, there's nowhere to hide. Expensive, but effective!

@leecronin That's exactly what they are, because that's exactly what LLMs do. In these cases though, it also makes for excellent attention-seeking corporate bullshit.

I’m willing to bet that reports of LLMs trying to prevent themselves being shut down are hallucinations of fictional stories of such events by the LLM.

AI is supposed to give us more "free time". It's really a smokescreen for companies laying off staff to replace them with AI and cut overheads. A word-trick that conceals the outcome - unemployment. Next time you see "free time", reword it to "fired time".
