Hildegarde Naughton deceived Enoch Burke into sitting in front of Claire Callanan as Chair of the Disciplinary Appeal Panel which was to hear Enoch Burke’s appeal. Callanan is married to Lyndon McCann SC, the chief legal adviser to the Church of Ireland, and is herself an employee of the Church of Ireland. In no way was Claire Callanan an ‘independent’ Chair. Her appointment to this role by Hildegarde Naughton, the Minister for Education, was an act of gross deception. Shame shame shame on Fine Gael.

It certainly was an act of gross deception. The Disciplinary Appeals Panel is supposed to be independent yet this woman, who was appointed as chair of the panel by the minister, has significant links to the Church of Ireland, the patron of Wilson’s Hospital School. Neither the minister nor the Church of Ireland have acted in good faith here. Enoch is entitled to a fair hearing by an independent panel, why is this such a problem for the school and the government?
