Since you ask, it is a criminal offence to obstruct the highway. More important, it is a serious common law offence to organise or agree with others to obstruct the highway or to blockade access to ports and depots. It is the offence of conspiracy. An indictable offence at common law. There is no constitutional right to do so. The State and the Gardai are entitled to clear the highway. Obstructing them is also a criminal offence. Check it out if you doubt me.

I tried to listen to Brendan O’Connor on RTE. IMHO he’s insane. A crazed conspiracy theorist with little grasp of how the world works. His panel are mostly foaming at the mouth lunatics spouting inane propaganda. Switched it off. RTE’s for the birds these days.

@paddycosgrave I’m not actually Paddy , I’ve barely been on this platform apart from this weekend for past 2 years. I’m happy to call out your gibberish anytime. Whipping up a frenzy is your MO , literally by the hour. Sad.

@EwanMacKenna From a farming background originally myself Ewan , as militant as they can be , once they get what they want , they will go back to farming and leave a vacuum for the far right headbangers to do whatever they think they need to do .correct though re no big tractors = protest dead

Another fact. Part of the pay off to truckers and farmers was they needed an out for their egos. That involved the illusion of the Gardai removing them. The Gardai could not remove a half dozen trucks in a night if the owners said no, let alone clear the country. The scabs sold you out and now want to fool you too. Sorry to burst many a bubble. I'm livid because sell outs and greed are traits that disgust me. #scabs

Made rookie error of starting into Kin after binging on Love/Hate. It is good, but nowhere near as good, and nowhere near as real either. Although it has at least reminded me that Ciarán Hinds is the single most under-appreciated Irish actor of all time. The aura of the man!

Galway Port, entirely peaceful, even joyful #FuelProtest and right now AGS in riot gear arriving. I am 57 years of age and have been pro-Garda my whole life. Whoever is deploying these officers is carrying out an act of wilful provocation.

I had a busy day today, but I finally made it up to O'Connell Street to meet with the protesters for Day 5. It was great to see some familiar faces from Meath, Cavan, and Louth. I had a wee chat with James Geoghegan. I hope he is well compensated by the media for defaming him. The atmosphere there is great: Gardaí on the ground are pleasant, and traffic is flowing—only O'Connell Street is blocked. Traffic on the Quays is flowing too. Hopefully, this government will put an end to these countrywide protests tomorrow with a package that benefits everyone. Keep it peaceful. #FuelProtests #MakeWorkPay

@buff_egan Go back to bed Buff , going against the GAA and retweeting the half wit trouble making leech D Blighe’s video here. That clown got his answer at the last election , now you are using his right wing lunacy and ramblings to implicate Aghada GAA. It was a national public order issue

@buff_egan Cop yourself on Buff. These people were illegally blockading a piece of key national infrastructure. It’s illegal , they were given days and days of warning. The country does NOT deserve to be put at risk because of the actions of a couple of hundred. Grow up and be a man

Dear Lord as many who follow me here know I'm no fan of Micheal Martin but the man is entitled to celebrate his daughter's wedding and indeed with a degree of privacy ...same way he should be able to go watch his son play for Cork without people abusing him ...

I sense the protests are losing support for five reasons... 1. The rationale. Lower taxes now but no protests when higher taxes. 2. The nefarious actors hijacking this. 3. The swathes of support for the reasons for the prices hikes (Trump and Israel). 4. Hurting ordinary people who also have bills and jobs, by targeting the wrong places. 5. There's a fair sense the demands are "give us money", the rest don't matter. Again I'm not against them, in principle, and understand much of it, but even as somewhat of an anarchist I'm reluctant to jump on this as it's far from black and white.

@EwanMacKenna I understand it also , I’m also one for understanding democracy and the rule of law and the art of negotiating. When I see the likes of Peppard , Blighe , McGregor + Ganley and his cronies weaponising for a far right gain - all my sympathy starts to fade

@declanganley Ireland is mid table in Europe for the amount of tax per litre it takes on excise. You’re an educated man and you know that. Yet you help fan the flames of a right wing agenda to those not as well read or as savvy as you. You might fool some of these people.

A busy and skilled carpenter/tradesman from Galway made this observation to me this morning and it struck me as likely true. He said he believes regular people did not realise that the price of [fuel], at the pump was more than double what it should be due to taxes collected by the Irish government. He said even if he had heard it before, he would have dismissed it as an exaggeration. Now everyone realises what has been going on and they’re not going to agree to back down on the demand that it be cut. #FuelProtest
