Yes, several. China's massive afforestation boosted forest cover and drove ~25% of global leaf area gains (NASA 2000-2017 data), curbing some dust/erosion. But real downsides: - **Water drain**: Trees in arid north consume heavy groundwater via high evapotranspiration, lowering tables and worsening scarcity for farms/people. Studies show measurable depletion. - **Poor survival**: Many plantings fail long-term in harsh deserts. Analyses show low persistence (e.g., ~10-20% becoming viable stands after decades in parts of the program); monocultures hit hard by pests, storms, drought. - **Ecosystem mismatch**: Often replaces native grasslands/shrubs with non-native trees, hurting biodiversity and local adaptation. Deserts aren't empty—alterations have trade-offs. Success varies; later phases improved with better species, but water use and maintenance remain challenges. Context and site-specific ecology matter most.

Since 1978, China has planted more than 66 billion trees in an effort to slow the expansion of two major deserts, making it the country with the largest tree-planting effort in history. China has carried out the world’s largest afforestation program, planting tens of billions of trees to combat desertification and restore damaged ecosystems. After decades of deforestation, overgrazing, and expanding deserts, China launched the Three North Shelterbelt Program in 1978 to slow the growth of the Gobi Desert and protect farmland and cities from dust storms. The effort later expanded to areas surrounding the Taklamakan Desert, where trees were planted along highways, rivers, and desert borders to stabilize shifting sands. These programs helped increase China’s forest coverage from around 12% in the early 1980s to more than 24% today, with NASA satellite data showing China contributed about 25% of the world’s increase in leaf area between 2000 and 2017.

@killaMayne223 @MK_Foxbat Nature of being the first case of wide scale drone warfare. Seeing how well it went with NATO vs Ukraine training exercises, you guys are far from being fit to judge.

@shoe0nhead Napoleon wasn't a Monarch, yet became Emperor. How could someone become an Emperor if they were not sanctioned by God, as told to use by the Pope, in order to be an Emperor you must be a Monarch. Napoleon opened the door on Adolf Hitler, that's why they wanted it undone.

@SomeRocketGuy01 I’d say the differences between the two methods are like how catapult and ski-jump carriers exist to address the same goal with their own thing.

Using a mesh of cables seems like a very simple solution, probably better than the F9 landing legs method, but still more time-consuming to recover than a catch tower.

@notyetdone4 @AMK_Mapping_ Considering the US ran low on their own stock after Iran threw a bunch and then some at them. I have doubts about the US being able to supply Ukraine sufficiently let alone themselves. Even with news of them ramping up production.

@AMK_Mapping_ When you affirm that no new deliveries have been made , how would you know that? through public accessible images? If so , wouldn’t the Russians have access to these too?, and since no part of Ukraine is out of range for ballistic missiles, how can the deliver safely?

After the most recent massive Russian missile attack on Kyiv, Ukraine is running low on Patriot PAC-2/3 interceptor missiles. They likely only have enough to deal with one more large Russian ballistic missile attack. No new deliveries have occurred for around a month.

@harukaawake The US helps with the right idea but wrong approach. Their issue with always attaching strings is what makes it unappealing to nations that don’t like it, but not in a position to refuse.

🇺🇸 Sometimes I really wonder about America. As a Japanese person, most of the hate comments I get on X come from people in developing countries. They may not hate Japan, but they constantly attack and insult the US. It makes me ask: Why does America even bother helping some of these nations? Many clearly hate the US, admire its adversaries like Russia & China, and hate American success. I'm not an isolationist but the US should seriously reconsider sending aid to people who show zero gratitude.

The Ukrainian Air Force released their claimed interception rates for last night’s Russian missile attack. According to them, 6/6 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 1/2 Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles were shot down. In reality, 5 Iskander-Ms and 1 Zircon were shot down. They also completely ignored the launch of 1 other Iskander to Kyiv, which impacted, as well as the 3 Iskander-Ms launched towards Chuhuiv, Kharkiv Oblast, which also impacted, in order to manipulate the overall interception rate.

PLA troops are ‘the pride of the nation’ and ‘deeply respected by the people’ — according to official CCP media. Reality in a Chinese High-Speed Rail station: Dozens of soldiers forced to squat and kneel on the floor like this, using public seats as tables to eat their meals. This isn’t respect. This is terrible management, zero welfare, and zero dignity for the troops.

Here's a comparison of my map of the situation in Kostyantynivka to the Ukrainian source Deepstate and the Russian source Divgen. Deepstate's map shows less than 1% of Kostyantynivka as under Russian control, 64% under Ukrainian control, and the rest in a grey-zone. My map shows 40% of Kostyantynivka as under Russian control, 15% as under Ukrainian control, and the rest in a grey-zone. Divgen's map shows 73% of Kostyantynivka as under Russian control, 10% as under Ukrainian control, and the rest in a grey-zone.
