Over the last week I’ve been whittling on about Fairey Swordfishes to the point where my 17yo daughter (who has no idea what one is) thinks I’m psychotic. “Is this ‘fairy swordfish’ in the room with you now..?” So I sent her this pic: “Erm, yes…”

You really couldn't make this up... MAV's (Hungarian Railways') IT contractor forgot that the clocks went forward on Saturday night... Result? MAV ends up paying automatic 1 hour delay compensation for Sunday morning trains that were on time...

Unfortunately, this means that from Wednesday you should NEVER buy a walk-up ticket (Anytime, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak) in advance. ALWAYS wait & buy on the day, as if you wake up on the day & find your plans have changed, event called off, whatever, you’ve lost all your money.
Simon Calder@SimonCalder

Rail ticket fraud. At last, a gaping loophole in the system will close, from Wednesday 1 April. Currently unscrupulous passengers buy an Anytime or Off-peak ticket, make the journey, and if the ticket isn't clipped or scanned they claim a refund, less £5. independent.co.uk/travel/news-an…

@seatsixtyone But if you want a seat there is not unlimited availability so you have to buy an AP ticket or stand with an Open ticket ?

@stephenbarker Remember we're talking *walk-up* fares here like Anytime or Off-Peak. These cost the same, whether bought on the day or in advance.

@seatsixtyone But they can be so much cheaper (though not as much cheaper as they used to be) bought days in advance. The risk is oBly that something changes actually on the day of travel .. if it changes between buying in advance and the midnight before the day of travel you can still refund.

@seatsixtyone I would just book a ticket on the 10.30 if that's the train I want. Whatever. This change won't affect anyone but scammers.

@mjsimpsonfilms No. Because until now, you’d have got your £95 back less a £5 admin fee if you chose not to use the ticket. So it didn’t matter. From Wednesday they’ll keep it keep it all if you haven’t cancelled by the day before. So why pay up front and risk that? Behavioural change needed.

@seatsixtyone You have a very strange way of doing things. In 50+ years of rail travel, I have never been in that situation.

@mjsimpsonfilms You plan. You know you want the 10:30. You know the Super Off Peak is £95. Do you also buy up front? That’d be £95 down the drain if your plans changed on the morning of departure. So you use your noddle, wait and buy on the day, when you’re SURE you’re going.

@seatsixtyone But why would anyone do that? Who makes a long journey without knowing when they are going to set off?

@seatsixtyone I genuinely don't understand why someone who intends to make a train journey would not work out in advance which train they want. Who plans a journey without actually planning the journey?

@monokichan I know, right? But I even caught Master 61 doing it, buying two days ahead when he needed to go into Town. If his plans had changed, he’d have lost a £5 admin fee. Now, he’d lose the lot.

@seatsixtyone Aren’t they dearer on the day and isn’t that the reason why people but advanced tickets? Also they should employ more people to check tickets instead of pushing it onto passengers.
