I want to offer a counter argument: If you are good at fidning new stocks and you have a high-hurdle rate, selling a "compounder" can still be the right decision if the IRR is worse than your new oppertunity that might gain 50% in 6 months, despite absolute rerutns for the compounder might be higher.

I think about this a LOT.
It’s very important to look for compounding in the stocks you buy for many reasons.
Certainly it means you can profit more per hour of research. But, it also protects your downside, ensures you find a long term asset, and provides protection against the market not recognizing what you have found for many years.

Almost all of the sharpest investors I know (especially on fintwit) spend months on research, unearthing truly hidden gems only to sell the stock for a quick double or triple, after the multiple expansion. Invariably, they end up missing out on significant gains as the stock continues compounding.

Interesting how refineries still get little love or attention compared to oil producers. The supply-demand structure was already much tighter going into the war than the oil market. It is much more difficult to increase supply than it is in for oil. Result: Crack spreads are going bunkers and because there is no easy to track metrics it’s much less oil prices that everyone watches daily

So now I am also a shareholder of $CPH.TO too. Even on conservative '23 numbers (~$9m earnings) and ascribing zero value to the ~30m in cash, we are looking at a P/E of ~7. Plus: You get share buybacks, potential MOB-015 release in 2025 and potential M&A.

A recommend every investor to spend some time studying commodity businesses to understand the importance of supply and demand.
Most microcaps don’t have a differentiated enough product to escape the supply and demand balance anyway.

Market seem to like that Petrotal is making money again. I think this is one of few oil companies that would do well at 80$ brent price over the next years. You recall back in the days they drilled wells with initial flow rates of 5-10k bopd that pay back in 1m #PTAL $TAL.to
