Here’s my take on this issue. My youngest son (17) is getting his license this week. When he’s asked where he’ll go once he can drive, he says “I don’t know, probably nowhere. I can drive myself to wrestling practice I guess.” There are no “places” for teens to go. Their freedom exists in the digital world, not the physical one. They put on a headset and hop on a game to hang with friends anytime. Life 360 means no physical freedom anyway. They aren’t gonna cruise around with friends when gas is $4 and a McDonald’s value meal is $11. License restrictions mean they can’t have more than one friend in the car and can’t drive after 10pm. Fewer teens have jobs are over scheduled with activities. And here’s the one reason I think is underrated: They’re much more aware of the dangers of driving than previous generations. They’ve seen a lot of horror stories, from peers on social media, that we weren’t exposed to. They see driving as dangerous, wasteful, and inconvenient. They’d rather not shoulder that responsibility and all of the downsides. And I believe modern parents see the dangers too. Driving is by far the most dangerous thing a teen can do. No need to rush it.
