The Good Time Rambler
The Good Time Rambler@marvingardns·
One of best naval wargames I’ve played is “Port Arthur” by Nuts games. Not only is it unbelievably beautiful and compact, but it has a wonderfully intuitive naval operations engine and unique battle resolution system. The game comes in a wonderfully ornamental “bento box” with a colorful board, unique ship counters, and meeples of Japanese soldiers. This is another Sea Control game, and is a better representative of this concept as a game than Kaiser’s High Seas Fleet. The goal of the Japanese is to maintain control of the sea zones where their naval transports land troops every turn. As these advance, they have the options to threaten Vladivostok, or to besiege and subsequently capture Port Arthur. The Russians must contest and dominate these sea zones to prevent the Japanese from taking Mukden and score more victory points than the Japanese by spreading their fleet thin and striking their weaker forces. By the fifth turn the Russian Baltic Fleet will arrive bringing more battleships to the scene of action. Until then, the Russians are outnumbered. Though they have more battleships, they are weaker and slower than the British-built ones of the Japanese. The naval operations and initiative system yield a bevy of action and response options at every phase, with squadrons chasing one another down, returning wounded squadrons to port, raiding into distant zones and seeking one another out in decisive engagement with maximum advantage. Battle itself is resolved using a wholly unique system of “bidding” a number of dice against the combined firepower of your squadron. If the aggregate number of your roll is less than the firepower, then you inflict as much damage as the dice you rolled. If you roll more, then the damage you inflict can be seriously impaired. Damage is allocated by the targeted player. Rolling doubles inflicts critical hits and are allocated by the targeting player. Ships can be at full strength, or at a damaged strength. They also have speeds where a squadron can move, operationally, no “faster” than the slowest ship making pursuits nail-biting affairs. But the fastest ship in the squadron determines firing order. An initiative token can be spent and given to the other player to gain incidental advantages, and a single turn can have multiple phases of battles, pursuits, sorties depending on a series of initiative rolls. The Russians need to buy time until the Baltic Fleet arrives, and the availability of the Vladivostok squadron creates a useful threat against distant sea zones the Japanese will tend to weakly patrol. The Russians need to coordinate their sorties of their more numerous battleships with that of the Vladivostok cruisers to keep the Japanese spread thin and off balance. At the end of a random series of phases that concludes a turn, by controlling one of the two landing zones they can halt or delay the advance of the Japanese army on the mainland. Preventing the Japanese Army from occupying the heights above Port Arthur is vital, otherwise damaged ships can no longer be repaired, including the latter arriving Baltic Fleet. If I have to recommend a brilliant, gorgeous, compact and quickplaying naval ship wargame, this is the one you need to start with first.

Heading to Portugal tomorrow for LeiraCon. So I decided to kill a day getting my evolving Alphastrike minis primed (I’ll paint when I get back) but I wanted to play. So I stuck bookmark flags on the pieces and then made my first move. Now reading the rules in more depth.

You just got a call from your friends. "Let's do a game night." Problem? They mostly play UNO and Monopoly, yet are curious why you're so into it. What is the first game you are playing ?

「1944: Race to the Rhine」。3

Beyond the Rhine (MMP / OCS) — Market Garden to the Rhine, autumn 1944. Dean Essig's OCS engine at its Western Front best. Supply, exploitation, friction. One of the great operational WWII designs. 🎖️ #wargaming #boardgames #wwii #ocs
