@BTCGandalf People have cared about it for a long time... Satoshi and Gavin proposed a script whitelist to stop it in 2010. Theymos opposed. Interesting history, you can still find all the posts on Bitcointalk forum

There's been "spam" on bitcoin pretty much since the start. Why have people only started caring about it now?

The debate around illicit activity on #Bitcoin is tearing us apart… We’re fighting each other, choosing sides, burning bridges when there’s a much bigger enemy out there Accusing people of supporting illicit activity on-chain just because they see things differently? Not okay. #Bitcoin is permissionless. It’s for everyone, even your enemies. There may be consensus-valid transactions you don’t like, but that doesn’t make them bad or an attack. Consensus is king. We’re all on the same team, working toward the same goal: seeing Bitcoin thrive. I truly hope we can move past this and come out stronger once the dust settles. I’m not expecting everyone to sing Kumbaya, just remember there are humans behind the screen.
