The White House's federal AI framework is a weak attempt to address the real world harms caused by AI systems today. It is a backroom deal that shields Big Tech from any liability whatsoever. The White House cannot allow AI companies to continue to exploit American citizens, families and children for profit while undoing meaningful safeguards in state law that protect our communities.

The White House released a plan to navigate the AI Technological Revolution. Here’s what you need to know:

This framework asks Congress to preempt state AI laws, but it hasn't earned that. It offers nothing on independent safety testing, no serious ideas on how to address labor market disruption, and no accountability standard for when AI systems cause harm. Worse, it would create a new liability shield for AI developers — the same type that has made platform accountability so difficult for the last two decades. States are moving on these issues because the federal government hasn't. You can't tell them to stop and then offer nothing in return.

Elissa Slotkin’s (D-MI) introduction of the AI Guardrails Act, which codifies critical red lines for the Department of Defense’s use of AI in the military. The legislation declares that the power to launch nuclear weapons remains solely with the Commander-in-Chief; prohibits the use of AI for mass surveillance of the American people; and bans the use of autonomous weapons without human involvement.
