We were honored to join @MarkWarner and @SenatorRounds in hosting Ray Kurzweil this morning for a conversation in the Senate on the national security implications of artificial general intelligence.

Sen. @HawleyMO on AI: “We want to see new technology create jobs, not destroy jobs. This is why we ought to pass legislation right now that would require these tech companies to turn over data on how many jobs they're creating OR how many jobs they're destroying.”

Josh Hawley (R-MO) on college graduates booing mentions of artificial intelligence at commencement ceremonies this week. “They can’t find jobs. 30-40% of them are unemployed, and they blame AI for this, and you know, they may well be right,” @HawleyMO told me. “We want to see new technology create jobs, not destroy jobs,” he added.

This is an important report, and an important pilot for how model evaluations should work. METR got access to the most capable internal models and conducted what may be the first independent assessment of misalignment risks inside frontier AI companies. The findings deserve serious attention from policymakers, and the process deserves to be replicated and eventually required.

A new Trump executive order would reshape how the U.S. government oversees powerful AI models, and it has two major components: 1.) The current draft calls for AI labs to share frontier models with the government at least 90 days before public release under a voluntary framework. 2.) It also targets cybersecurity across national security agencies, hospitals, and banks. It would boost cyber hiring and threat-sharing between industry and government. (Per @axios)
