The sequence of events are something like this: - They've already tapered QT by 50% - Now as RRP gets near 0 and we near their target level of reserves of 3% of GDP, they will aim to end QT - There is concern that the resolution of the debt ceiling will lead to a large rebuild of the TGA leading to outsized bill issuance. This could cause an interim hiccup in funding markets and is what @conksresearch has been writing and warning about. They are trying to get ahead of this. - They are very very very very far from any sort of formal QE. Instead, its more likely they pursue an SLR exemption allowing commercial banks to be the marginal buyer of debt. This combo of potential SLR exemption + ending QT are likely dampeners to address this debt ceiling rebuild air pocket - To move to outright QE, things would have to get WAY WORSE. Like, risk assets would need to crash first and rates taken to near 0 or 0, and then if that isn't enough, QE. Therefore think for the current liquidity backdrop it is marginally improving in that we will have the possible sequence of TGA drawdown into QT ending into potentiall SLR exemption, and that'll be it for now. QE shouldn't even be in the current vocabulary of discourse as it stands. Hope this helps clarify :)
