@Dr_Singularity Like, I'd understand not wanting to have a nuclear power plant in my neighborhood, but a data center is just a bunch of computers in a warehouse! What's so terrible about hat?

this is madness "7 in 10 Americans oppose constructing data centers for AI in their local area, including nearly half, 48%, who are strongly opposed." Data centers are becoming the new nuclear power plants. Everyone wants the benefits of AI: faster medicine, better science, cheaper services, smarter tools, more abundance. But when it’s time to actually build it, no one wants it near them. The AI age needs energy, chips, cooling, land, transmission lines, and massive data centers. We won't get the amazing, advanced future (abundance, no diseases, aging cured - we need a TON of AI to achieve this) by opposing every piece of infrastructure required to build it.

Brad Pitt is still alive by the way. They could have just asked him to play the ghost of Achilles and his signs of ageing would have just worked for him to show his decayed essence as a spirit in the underworld. The movie would have instantly become far more watchable. Ana de Armas as Athena. Henry Cavil as Odysseus. You could even get an AI to turn the Fagles translation into a screenplay. It's so freaking easy if they actually wanted to make a good movie and had 300 million dollars to do it!! AHHhhhh this makes me so mad.
Joseph Kahn@JosephKahn

I watched TROY again and I think the problem is Brad Pitt is the definitive Achilles. Anything below his feral physical perfection comes off like weak ass cosplay. Every man is Elliot Page compared to this guy.

Christopher Nolan asked the Oracle of Delphi, "Will audiences love my adaptation of the Odyssey?" And the Pythia replied, "They will discuss it non-stop for months before it even premieres." And away he went, glad in this heart, poor fool.

"Forward estimate is culture" Sounds suspiciously like a large system predicting the most likely outcome? Like a LLM?
Aakash Gupta@aakashgupta

This pattern has a name and nearly a century of research behind it: pluralistic ignorance. Katz and Allport coined the term at Syracuse in 1931. White fraternity members privately had no objection to admitting racial minorities, but each one assumed every other member would object. So they voted to exclude. The private majority and the public majority were opposites. Prentice and Miller replicated it at Princeton in 1993 with drinking. Students were personally uncomfortable with campus alcohol practices but believed the average student was way more comfortable than they were. Male students then drifted their actual attitudes toward what they wrongly believed everyone else thought. Bursztyn, González, and Yanagizawa-Drott ran the cleanest version in Saudi Arabia, published in AER 2020. 87% of married Saudi men in Riyadh privately believed women should be allowed to work outside the home. They thought a minority of other men did. When researchers showed them the actual number, four months later their wives were measurably more likely to have applied and interviewed for jobs. The 80/40 sex gap is the same machine. A loud confident minority sets the perceived norm. The silent majority assumes they are the outlier. To avoid social cost, they project the norm they think exists. The projection becomes other people's data. The loop self-stabilizes at a number nobody actually represents. The fix that works is embarrassingly simple. Tell people the real number. Northern Illinois ran the first social norms intervention in 1989: students personally binge drank at 43% but thought peers did at 70%. The university posted the actual number around campus and real consumption dropped. The data alone did the work. Most of what we call "culture" is a forwarded estimate of what other people are doing.

@dissidentwest @aidannonx I'm German and so I was expecting some kind of anti-German guilt trip overlong art house overhyped piece of propaganda, but it's the complete opposite. An excellent movie, at least in my humble opinion, way better than 5 years of history in school.

We're told that we shouldn't object to Helen of Troy being portrayed as a black woman. And yet if a major Hollywood studio made a film set in Africa and cast a white woman as "the most beautiful woman in Africa," those same people would literally riot in the street. If, say, Sydney Sweeney was cast in the role, they'd be driven to murderous violence. We all know this is the case.
