A 320 acre pasture just sold for over $1 million in our area. Won’t be long before grass is bringing more than tillable ground. Five years ago pasture was bringing $1000-$1500 per acre. I guess I better scratch buying grass and expanding the cowherd off my list.

@HRT_USA @gfy_ag @snarkosaurous Need to reduce all those numbers by about half and I’m serious. Again, my part of the world. Now compared to corn in my area, we need to gross at least $490/ac for corn. Can almost pencil in a breakeven on that right now, beans are green. That’s the point I’ll trying to make

I will speak for the farmer here. Maybe outta turn. -if the farmer has fertilizer bought he’s planting corn -corn at the CBOT IS HIGHER THAN LY. -beans in the north are a glorified cover crop at this point. 95+ million acres. Crude has to be respected. -@snarkosaurous

May feeders feel like they have more downside. The contract held support yesterday, but volume was mediocre and open interest declined. A 38%-50% retracement of the Oct-Feb rally is a likely target for sellers. Bouncing from there, a test of Oct highs is still possible.

Look, I’m not trying to show anyone how smart I am, I’m just trying to give hope and a plan to young folks trying to get a foothold. When you’re young, you can either stay safe by standing on the sidelines envying and mocking those who are in the game, or you can get in the game and take a chance on getting hurt. I highly recommend the latter.

@Seehafer55 I was too young back then, but I bought thousands of acres in 2002-2007. Those farms are worth 5-6x what I paid for them.

@Seehafer55 I’m not saying it can’t happen, but the only time land has gone backwards in my lifetime was a 5 year period in the 1980s.

NO idea if she is a bluffer Don't really care Tagging commercial calves at birth is the most useless and zero return on investment, risk vs reward and unneeded human intervention in the whole cattle industry The cow knows which calf is hers and can't read an eartag anyway

@TheDailyCowman I see it is not tagged…is she not a bluffer?!

Is there a price level at which you would sell a large portion of your herd? If so, what is that price level? What would you sell, and what would you do next? These are questions that cattle producers like myself should probably be considering, similar to drought planning.

You could maybe breakeven at today prices depending on death loss. You finance them for 7 years, will they breakeven for all 7 years until paid off? If you make it through the first 7 years you will need to start a replacement plan. I wonder what year you would actually make enough money to make it worth your time?

Buying a scenic ranch on the verge of development that I didn’t have enough cash to pay for outright. It was one of those places that would lead to a lifetime of regret if I didn’t buy it but my plan as to how to get it paid off is sketchy because it takes time and relies on tax credits from a state that can’t pay its bills and grants that are quickly getting axed. It would develop easily as a plan b but I think that would be a crime.

I was just told that @PifersAuction @pifersauctions representative told another bidder that "a guy from SD on the state line" won the auction. #1. that's so damn vague and I can see how that rumor started then. Why not give out the actual name??????? #2. I fully expect Pifers to clear this up publicly, as this is on the verge of defamation and it's obvious who the assumption points to ... Or maybe they did purposely to draw attention away from the actual "rent pusher".......
SodBuster@josh_sayler

PLEASE SHARE.... I am putting this out here to try to get the TRUTH out and STOP misinformation that is damning to my reputation/business. I/my kids DID NOT BID or register on any of the land rent auctions around Wishek/Zeeland ND area. The rents went almost double of current prices and am being accused that I bid/won all 3 of them... I am not sure who/why started the rumors and I have called some people that I respect in the area to find out what they have heard, and man I get the feeling they are pissed(rightfully so) and don't really believe me. This is NOT what i do or have ever done. I did not get where I am by "running rents". I have NO interest in bidding on a rent auction as I want long term landlords, not ones who might put on auction every 3 yrs. The damage this misinformation is causing with friends, current landlords, reputation etc, is horrible/frustrating.. I found out this morning it was talked about at an ag meeting in Fargo!!! Wtf. So from that statewide meeting , it is being spread statewide and I am being accused of being a land "pig/rent pusher" statewide and that is NOT how I want to be known... I am trying to get in contact with Pifer auction company and get them to prove that I wasn't even registered to bid on anything. Thank you for taking the time to read this .

@Seehafer55 My wife would say I spend more time with the cows than her. I think it’s a huge mistake to ignore the grain side of an operation and not try to make it as profitable as possible. But Hey, that’s just me you do you.

This won't be fun, but I'm going to stress test the farm operation today. Running yield & price scenarios, accounting for crop insurance and PLC, to see what it would take for the farm to run out of cash to continue. Going to look at it by month through 2029. I might need a drink after doing this 🍺

Everyone leaning hard into cattle. Grain guys looking at diversifying. Carcass weights at unprecedented levels, record imports, heifer retention. Proceed with caution. Look beyond this fall.
