@GarthGatson @Farm4ProfitLLC You are right. The farm/a business should be able to pay you approximately what you’d be worth doing the same for someone else. Maybe less if you are also being compensated through land equity or a “bonus” depending on the year. But yea, your way of doing it is very clean.

The farms that survive the next 10 years won’t be the biggest. They’ll be the ones that know their numbers better than anyone else. What’s one number every farmer should know daily?

@steveconaway1 @BradyD78 @Farm4ProfitLLC I try hard to give accurate estimates of when I’ll be home. It sounds silly, but that’s a serious piece of marriage advice I would give farmers. I feel like my wife can hold down the fort at home with our kids a lot better when she has confidence I’ll be home when I say I will.

@steveconaway1 @Farm4ProfitLLC A year or two ago I switched to paying myself a monthly salary. I feel like that has provided financial clarity for the finances of both my business and my household.

@steveconaway1 @Farm4ProfitLLC You could argue that it’s purely semantics and you’d probably be right, but I personally really prefer “manager’s salary” to “family living expenses”. If the farm can’t pay my salary, that’s a farm problem. If we can’t live on my salary, that’s a household finance problem.

The “this time is different” narrative is becoming more compelling by the month. CattleFax has said 5-weight calves won’t sell with a 2-handle again. $315 is the new floor (to be taken with a grain of salt).

Since the start of 2026 the CME feeder #cattle index is +$10.75/cwt. Since peaking on 2/20 the index has fallen by $12.27/cwt. Over the last 5 years the average decline from the February high to the March low is -4.75%. The market seems to be getting close to a bottom?

@EdieCreekAngus I try not to buy bulls if I can help it. What I actually need to do one of these days is to find someone closer to me who uses your genetics and try to buy some heifers from them.

I got an “Emergency” Livestock Relief Program payment this week. For an “emergency” (drought) that occurred in 2023. Cattle are at record highs, feed is cheap, and the USDA is mailing me checks. What are we even doing?

Idk how poor a calf has to be right now to be worth less than $2000, but evidently they’ve got to be worse than the two short, red, very mediocre 420 pound heifers I sold today. What a time to have cattle for sale.

@GarthGatson I do need to do that. Have it all in excel by version revision but that’s just not as fun. In 2019 I had a really bad day and sat down in excel to see what we would need to do in order to gross $1MM on a cow sale 🤗🤙
