The idea is quite simple and inspired by the TLSF allocator. It has some nice properties, all operations are basically O(1), ~1 bit overhead per data slot, deterministic slot allocation with good memory locality. Here's my article with more details: jakubtomsu.github.io/posts/bit_pool…

free-list-based pools have an weird property people don't talk about - at some point the slot allocation pattern becomes almost random. But there are alternative approaches, which don't use free lists at all. Lately I've been using a multi-level bit pool:
