It has been reported in the press that I commissioned Karon Monaghan KC to carry out a thorough investigation into our union. This is true. After being elected as General Secretary, I received a number of complaints from staff and members. It quickly became clear that the organisation would benefit from a formal review. Karon Monaghan KC was asked to conduct this review because she is EHRC-accredited, understands trade unions, has a strong record of making practical recommendations, and has previously conducted reviews for other unions (most notably the GMB). It has also been reported that she uncovered institutional or cultural problems within the union. This is categorically false. Her report states: “I did not find evidence of a culture of, or systemic, misogyny, sexual harassment, racism, transphobia, bullying or antisemitism.” That said, we are a very large organisation, with over 500,000 members and 600 staff, and there are improvements we can and should make to our policies and procedures. Karon has made a number of constructive recommendations, which we will work through and implement. Our aim is for this to be the best possible union to work for and to be a member of, and we already have a strong foundation on which to build. Karon Monaghan KC concludes in her report: “NEU is a strong union with clear progressive values. Many members I spoke to were proud of the NEU and strongly committed to its aims. Many staff I spoke to said they enjoyed working for the NEU and were committed to its values. The commitment of members and staff provides a strong foundation, and the recommendations in this report are intended to build on it.” I received the full report this week and it is currently with the National Executive. We will publish it in full in due course.

One of younger Gen Z & Alpha’s biggest influencers is challenging himself to read aloud for 20 minute blocks at a time. You can poke fun at this, but it’s actually a really great practice & will lead to increased literacy for countless kids who follow.

I know teachers who: - Have stopped drinking water during the day because the staff toilet next to them has been broken for months. - who have an hour added to their morning routine because all but one photocopiers are broken. - are struggling to manage because most Support Staff cut. The lack of funding is sending workloads sky high and making the average day gruelling. Education is running on empty. It needs correcting at the budget.

To those with genuine concern for my big sister Dolly’s well being, she posted a video last week to share with her fans that she has had kidney stones and is getting treatment. My sister Freida is always concerned when one of her siblings isn’t feeling well so she ask for prayers on Dolly’s behalf. It’s my job as a sister to both of them to love and respect their privacy as I expect them to do for me. To those of you who make it your job to attack me for not being your personal information center, you need to go check their pages! Most fans are genuinely concerned but some of you are way out of line with disregard for my feelings concerning their wellbeing. My big sister will share with her fans when she so chooses in the meantime don’t come at me with questions or insults.

In an ideal world, I'd argue that all secondary teachers should spend at least one week per year in a primary setting. Are there any schools or Trusts out there who get close to this? Does anyone have a strong argument against it?
