Microcytosis is not one diagnosis, it’s a pattern. Iron deficiency, thalassemia, inflammation, and rare causes all produce small cells — but for very different reasons. Same size. Different biology.

The cholesterol wars are over. LDL won. New guidelines. Four landmark trials. An oral PCSK9 inhibitor that matches injectables. And data proving we should be treating patients we currently aren't. Here's everything clinicians need to know. 🧵

My colleagues at UHN, Chris (@CmcintoshAi) and Dr. Heather Ross, just published in @NatureMedicine — and it's worth paying attention to. pVO₂ — peak oxygen uptake — is the gold standard for gauging heart failure severity. But measuring it requires a treadmill and a hospital. Their AI model trained on Apple Watch data can estimate pVO₂ continuously, from daily life. The clinical hook: a 10% drop in wearable-estimated pVO₂ predicted unplanned hospitalizations with >3x elevated risk — caught roughly a week before the event. That's not a fitness tracker. That's an early warning system for decompensation, worn on your wrist. Ambient, passive, continuous — the kind of longitudinal signal you simply can't get from clinic visits. Proud to be at @UHN where this kind of work happens Congratulations 🎉 @bradwouters @PMunkCardiacCtr

Google dropped another banger! PaperBanana is an agentic framework that generates publication-ready academic illustrations from methodology descriptions. no manual design, no Figma, just your method section and a caption.

The prognosis of liver disease depends on the extent of fibrosis, which is usually staged with the use of liver biopsy. The limitations of biopsy have led to the development of noninvasive tests, which Drs. Laurent Castera, Mary E. Rinella, and Emmanuel A. Tsochatzis review. Learn more: nej.md/4hwZMgj
