Great quick summary writeup of our upcoming implementation of Orchard shielded transactions for the Evolution chain!

The EU just enacted some pretty Orwellian anti-privacy laws regarding cash and crypto. Make no mistake, this is very bad! But it's not (yet) as doomsday as many people have been saying, and there are some silver linings. WHAT DOES THE NEW LAW SAY? (if I got any of this wrong, please feel free to correct me in the comments) Here's the new law that was recently enacted: europarl.europa.eu/meetdocs/2014_… Basically, concerning crypto, it prohibits anonymous payments to and from exchanges and custodians. If to/from a noncustodial wallet, the recipient/sender must KYC (give identifying info). Two notable passages: "The prohibition [of anonymous crypto-asset accounts] does not apply to providers of hardware and software or providers of self-hosted wallets insofar as they do not possess access to or control over those crypto-assets wallets." And: "...two types of crypto-asset service providers: providers engaged in exchange services between virtual currencies and fiat currencies and custodian wallet providers." Basically, this affects a service that either deals with fiat exchange, or custodial services. Both of those will only be able to deal with identified persons! 🚫🕵️ WHICH SERVICES ARE AFFECTED? 🌐 Exchanges (even crypto-only) will have to KYC all users, and addresses for self-custody 🌐Custodial payment providers and those with automatic fiat conversion will have to KYC all customers 🌐Custodial wallets will have to KYC 🌐Crypto ATMs and noncustodial fiat on-ramps may have to KYC everyone (not 100% sure about this but I think so) WHAT WILL THE FALLOUT BE? ⚡️Custodial wallets (like popular Lightning wallets like Wallet of Satoshi and Exodus) are screwed, they will need to KYC everyone or shut down ⚡️Custodial merchant payment processors will either KYC everyone (so only accept from custodial wallets), or change their model ⚡️NONcustodial merchant payment processors win big! They can process payments from anyone ⚡️ATMs and no-KYC-under-a-certain-amount on-ramps will go full-KYC or go away ⚡️There will be a growing divide between the KYC crypto ecosystem and the anonymous world WHAT SHOULD WE DO NOW?! Decentralize all the things! Yes, we can (and should!) push back on these regulations, demand to leave the EU, etc., but realistically we need to adjust our behavior. If we lived 100% on p2p crypto and only used decentralized/noncustodial tools, this new law wouldn't affect anyone at all! We'll increasingly find this as a trend moving forward: "cypherpunk not affected". The principles of crypto (self-custody, no fiat, decentralization, privacy, etc.) are there for a reason! Live by them and you protect yourself against dystopian overreach. My guess is that, publicly, this will look really bad for crypto as many services have to either shut down or perform surveillance for their masters. But behind the scenes, the decentralized revolution will only grow stronger. ✊ Here for it.

I'm an unapologetic proponent of free market systems. -Anyone can try X -People profit more the better they do X -No one has to pay anyone for X if they don't want to This is a recipe for efficiency and good outcomes. Nothing else comes close.
