A few months later, at next job, I read on the news that Star Employee was fabricating magazine subscription sales to get rewarded by the company, their reputation continued to suffer and the manager was out.

Long ago, I worked at a bookstore (lets call it "Books-A-Billion"). At checkout employees were supposed to push magazine subscriptions on the customer and the manager tracked how many each employee sold. Manager said we were supposed to make the customer say "no" three times...
