The Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources is undertaking a fact-finding mission to Newfoundland and Labrador, from Monday, March 15 to Thursday, March 19, as part of its study of the province’s offshore petroleum industry. Senators will meet with industry leaders, environmental organizations, academics and government officials in St. John’s. They will also participate in site visits to key industrial facilities, research centres and ports. These activities will provide senators with insight into Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore energy sector, marine industries and environmental stewardship efforts, and deepen the committee’s understanding of how these sectors shape local communities and support the province’s economy. #SenCA #ENEV

How do you protect a 100+ year-old building from earthquakes? Ottawa isn’t immune to seismic activity. In fact, the nation’s capital has experienced several seismic events over the past century, including a magnitude 5.0 quake in 2010. To protect the building, base isolators – giant shock absorbers – are being installed beneath Centre Block. These isolators absorb and redirect shaking, allowing the building to sway gently instead of being jolted. This helps protect its historic stonework and interiors for generations to come.
