Happy National Ag week! Agriculture is the heart and soul of Nebraska. When we invest in our young farmers and ranchers, we're securing the future of the safest and most abundant food supply in the world. We supported this future in the Working Families Tax Cuts with an extension of the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Benefit and a permanent Death Tax exemption. This helps young farmers and ranchers start their own operation or take over the family business.

Only American citizens should vote in our elections. This is common sense and it is consistent with the work I did as Governor of Nebraska. Nebraskans passed a law requiring voter ID. The ballot initiative passed overwhelmingly, 65-35. Nebraskans supported having secure elections then and they support it now. I’m proud to support the SAVE America Act.

Congratulations to Grand Island native Gary Staab, who was selected to create the bronze bison sculptures headed to the Smithsonian! The statues will stop at the University of Nebraska State Museum-Morrill Hall in Lincoln on March 14 before traveling to the National Mall. The wildfires in Western Nebraska are the largest since Nebraska became a state. My office is here to help amid this historic disaster. For those harmed by the wildfires, the USDA Farm Service Agency Disaster Assistance Program may be able to help. It’s important to document any damages and report them to USDA to ensure assistance. Today, I declared a state of emergency within Morrill, Garden, Arthur, Keith, Lincoln, Dawson, and Frontier Counties to help combat wildfires. This proclamation allows the Nebraska Adjutant General, who also serves as State Disaster Coordinator, to activate appropriate State emergency plans and take such steps as he deems necessary to meet this emergency and protect life and property in this state. Additional actions include: —ordered NDOT road graders to assist with fire breaks —ordered National Guard troops to assist local firefighters —deployed National Guard helicopters to do aerial firefighting —activated a state-led Complex Incident Management Team to coordinate response

The Working Families Tax Cuts supports the next generation of ag leaders. Whether taking over the family business or starting their own operation, it encourages young Nebraskans to enter the ag industry. We strengthened the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Benefit. We extended its coverage from five years to ten years. That gives new producers access to critical risk management tools for longer.
