Well, that's a wrap. After 34 years, today was my final day at the #NewWest @TheRecord @BurnabyNOW_News. Today's focus was on cranking out some community stories 🧵

@DConnellyNW @stickers66 @MaryAnnMcKenzie Just when I think this is as bad as possible, it gets worse! Blood thinners for someone who might need urgent surgery - yikes! Good thing you are able to stay one step ahead. Think of all those with no support or advocate.

@Senseofhistory @stickers66 @MaryAnnMcKenzie Another interesting (concerning) thing, standard of care is to inject blood thinners daily in to patients. He hadn’t had surgery, still could’ve presented as an emergent scenario. After 1st one we declined the others b/c no clear explanation why for him as he was not bedridden.

Son was at ER and has been diagnosed w/ strongly suspected appendicitis but hospital has no ultrasound availability and no beds so we have been sent home w/ morphine until we get a call. A ruptured appendix can be deadly and recovery is much longer (more taxing on the system!).

@DConnellyNW @stickers66 @MaryAnnMcKenzie Makes you wonder why some people are in the medical field at all, doesn't it? FIW, if it were mine, I'd go for elective removal, but the wait time is probably ridiculous for that too. I'm so sorry you are having to go through all this.

@Senseofhistory @stickers66 @MaryAnnMcKenzie Home yesterday and on pain meds / 2 antibiotics. Had to fight to get a follow up ultrasound, surgeon said it was an unnecessary diagnostic and waste of taxpayer $. Without it not sure how we know abscess has resolved. We also opted to get consult and have it removed electively.

@stickers66 @Senseofhistory @MaryAnnMcKenzie Finally got in to a bed last night and on heavy duty IV antibiotics. They said it’s day by day right now in hopes he can reabsorb the abscess and fingers crossed won’t need surgery. 🤞🏻 thanks for asking.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

@Senseofhistory @MaryAnnMcKenzie Finally saw surgeon. Too infected for surgery. They are admitting him on strong IV antibiotics. Now the wait for a bed. Poor kid has been in a hard chair for 7 hrs w/ extreme pain and discomfort in abdomen. Thx for asking. 🙏🏻

@DConnellyNW @MaryAnnMcKenzie How is he doing Danielle? Hoping he has had surgery by now. And equally important, how are you doing? You must be ready to either explode or collapse.

@MaryAnnMcKenzie Thanks. Finally got in to next stage of triage. It is actually perforated but no surgeon available to consult yet. At least he is getting back on iv antibiotics and pain meds now … as he sits upright in a chair in the crowded waiting room!

@DConnellyNW @MaryAnnMcKenzie I know the system is broken, but this level of incompetence is hard to fathom. And they wonder why people go to private sources! So sorry this is happening to your family, Danielle. Hang in there & keep us updated.
