Meet Zion. He is my number one hero. Let me tell you why. Zion has a rare diagnosis, Congenital muscular dystrophy related to the LMNA gene, or L-CMD for short. Zion also happens to be going to my daughters school, actually they go in the same class. They have known each other since they were about 2 months old. Zion is a lovely little boy with the biggest of hearts, he has very little muscular strength yet he carries they weight of the world on his tiny shoulders. Yesterday was Rare Disease Day and also Zions dads birthday. Konrad posted this heartwarming story about Zion and his current situation. I'll include it in its entirety below. Before we read the message from him. I want to ask for a favour. There are so many of us here, and all Zions dad wants for his birthday is help with donations so that Zion and kids like Zion can potentially be cured. This is one of the matters that are closest to heart for me personally. I see Zion every single day. I see his progress, his struggles and his ever so burning smiles. Then I see him sad, tired and in constant need of support from his family and friends. I see him next to my healthy daughter, playing the best way he can. I see Zion, and I want you to see him too. -------------- A message from Zions dad, Konrad. Zion was born in the spring of 2020 during the early months of the Covid pandemic. Things were different from the start. But, we built our nest at home. We started to get to know and love each other. At 4 months old, we noticed that Zion wasn't hitting certain physical milestones like being able to lift his head. We consulted with doctors who discovered signs of hypotonia, which describes a weakness in muscle tone. We were quickly forwarded to a specialist at @sjdhospitalbarcelona where genetic testing was done, and a few long weeks later, we had a diagnosis: Congenital muscular dystrophy related to the LMNA gene, or L-CMD for short. We were clueless about what this meant. So, we started researching. Finally, thanks to @curecmd, @lcmdfoundation and @cure4carmela were able to understand the impact this diagnosis would have on our lives. L-CMD is a particularly rare form of muscular dystrophy. It is caused by a mutation of the LMNA gene that leads to muscle degradation over time. It affects skeletal muscles. Some kids may achieve walking but will lose that ability over time. Vital muscles like the heart and lungs are also affected and will eventually stop functioning. There is currently no treatment or cure for L-CMD. Today, Zion is nearly 4 years old. He can sit on his own and lift his head for short periods of time. He doesn't walk. Zion recently received his first wheelchair and loves zipping around in it. He also has specialized chairs that support his back to avoid scoliosis for as long as possible. He spends about 1 hour each day in his standing device to support bone density. I've set up a fundraiser to help Zion and other kids affected by L-CMD. Konrad ---------- If you could help me, by a small donation, or simply spread this to anyone in the world that you know work with or has experience with L-CMD. If you know of any organisation or medical team that we should be talking too. Anything that can help the chances for Zion would be deeply appreciated, and I'll forever be grateful for your contribution, in whatever way shape or form it would be. Sharing this post is the simplest thing you can do 🙏🏼 🔗 cure-cmd-2024.funraise.org/fundraiser/kon…

Alright, here is an observation. People react extremely naively to AI taking jobs. Especially creatives. Look, if you are triggered, something is probably up. If you are taking gen AI images at face value, you are missing the forest for all trees. It’s actually very simple. Look beyond the individual images, and look at the technology. Large brands, businesses and agencies are right now in a race to train their own proprietary ai models and tools. To do more with less. Initially there will be more jobs around for a short period of time, to work on augmentation and automation. These people will work on making themselves obsolete. Many jobs will vanish, many jobs will transition, and a few new jobs will appear. Some companies will pride themselves with keeping humans around, others can’t afford too. There is nothing unnatural about this, in fact it’s as easy to predict as the fact that we’re all going to die (at some point, this might also change soon). Now, what’s truly hard to say for sure, is what happens next. Will this take 20 years, 10 years, 5 years or even less before these major shifts happen? To be clear this is not just creative jobs, it’s all white collar jobs. Everything is about to change. We don’t know for sure about timeframes. Society has a lot of inertia and viscosity. So changing everything at once will be met with some natural resistance. This is good, gives us time to adapt. Government and regulators will have such a hard time to catch up. That by the time something substantial is in place, it’s already too late, it’s like trying to regulate biological life itself. Will be extremely hard. With all of this happening, we also in parallel have the race towards AGI and ultimately super intelligence. IF AI becomes illegal, it will be 1000x larger problem than the narcotics industry. So we won’t end up with it being illegal. Or if we do, it won’t work. Another reason why it won’t be banned, is because the potential societal upsides are so large that countries banning it will lose to the ones that won’t. It’s a Cold War in many ways. I’m seeing a lot of people commenting on my posts with a very strong opposition to AI. Most are very misinformed about current capabilities and what’s SOTA right now. Many are completely missing the mark all together. Many think I’m sharing what I share because I’m a narcissist and happy about job loss. This could not be further from the truth. As I’ve stated basically daily now for well over a year. The core reason why I keep sharing, is to help shine a light on what’s possible and make sure less people are left behind. The time to get involved and learn about what’s going on is now. You can still try to stay relevant I do what I can, and this year ~200.000 people have chosen to listen to what I have to say. For that I’m grateful, and I’m just getting started, my mission is to make sure nobody is left behind. Impossible task for sure, but it motivates me to keep sharing, to keep educating, regardless of the hate, negativity and miss information. It’s my fuel to keep going. I’ve never seen anything like this in my lifetime, and probably won’t ever see it again. This is the time to shift your minds to be playful, open and to ingest information like never before. I’m here to help. Want to stay informed? Get my weekly gist here 👇 Insidemyhead.ai

While intelligence *leverages* compression in important ways in representation learning, intelligence and compression are by nature opposite in key aspects. Because intelligence is all about *generalization to future data (out of distribution)* while compression is all about *efficiently fitting the distribution of past data*. If you're optimal at the latter, you're terrible at the former. If you were an optimal compression algorithm, the behavior policy you would develop during the first 10 years of your life (maximizing your extrinsic rewards such as candy intake, while forgetting all information that appears useless as per past rewards) would be entirely inadequate to handle the next 10.
Yi Ma@YiMaTweets

Based on our latest study: arxiv.org/abs/2311.13110, compression seems to be all there is in current AI systems, including GPT-4. The remaining question is: Can compression alone lead to general intelligence or even consciousness? My bet is a clear NO.
