Since muscle fibers produce about 1.8 times as much force eccentrically as concentrically, only 55% of the fibers need to be activated to generate the same amount of whole muscle force. This changes how we think about how hypertrophy is stimulated by strength training.

This suggests that both tendon size and disorganised fibres may be reducing! Against previous suggestions, both the donut and hole may be adapting. (This is cross-sectional data….. longitudinal data on this coming in the new year)

Prediabetes risk mediates the relationship between tendon structure and lower extremity function in those with Achilles tendinopathy. This work highlights that metabolic health is important to consider during treatment for this injury.

Great research from Tjerk Visser & colleagues has given us normative values for calf testing that go beyond reps alone!
Assessing peak height, total work & total displacement can provide valuable insight into calf function.
