A couple folks mentioned trickiest part here was the blocking tight ends, who in a vacuum seemed like reaches but given the run that happened made them think perhaps swaths of the league was higher on that type of player than they realized.

Indeed, this was not a good trade. Most trade-ups are already negative-EV decisions but this one was bad even relative to the typical overpay cost on day two.

The #Giants paid a hefty price for Malachi Fields, which included a coveted 2027 pick. Teams treated '27 picks like gold during draft weekend. Only 3 '27 picks outside of final two rounds were moved. 1. Eagles sent a '27 third to Minny in Jonathan Greenard deal 2. Giants sent '27 fourth to Browns to get Fields 3. Seattle sent a '27 fourth to Cleveland for a '26 fifth

At the time of pick No. 6, there was a 90% chance Mansoor Delane would make it to pick No. 9, per the Draft Day Predictor. Even if that number is a little high, that's the hidden cost of trade-ups: there's a substantial chance the Chiefs gave up a 3 and a 5 for nothing!
