Communists are rejoicing at the news of New York's new extortion aimed at rich out-of-state property owners. I think there are three things that are absolutely un-American about this proposal (big surprise, huh). First off is the foundational principle that is as old as America itself "No taxation without representation". By its very design, this tax is on people who CANNOT be represented in the New York government. Secondly, interstate commerce is within the exclusive purview of the Federal government. New York cannot tax people doing business across state lines at any other rate than they tax those doing business inside the state itself. Third is the very foolish and economically-illiterate precedent it sets. What is to prevent the people of Colorado, for example, from levying the same sort of illegal extraction of wealth from New Yorkers who own second homes in the Centennial State? Is more tax revenue likely to be extracted from the pockets of rich New Yorkers or from the pockets of rich Coloradans?
