I write for @jacobin, arguing that CPI-M's mishandling of the Muslim question reflects a deeper crisis within the party. Their electoral balancing of majority-minority calculus points to a drift into identity conflicts and a betrayal of their long standing claim of anti-IdPol.

My cell has been feeling different too. When I left for home after the interim bail, there was still hope somewhere that maybe, the judgement would be made in our favour. This is why I had bundled up all my books, notes, letters, pictures, cards and carried them home with me. Now that the bail has been rejected and there’s no chance to leave this place at least for another year, the space I created within my cell feels like an empty slate. Perhaps, this is a good thing. It’s a new innings, after all. The first few days after a judgement comes are always difficult to cope with. In fact, the day I was denied bail by the Supreme Court, I was transported back to 2022, when my bail was rejected the very first time in the trial court. The suddenness of the news hit me in the gut in the same way. But after spending more than five years here, after my bail has been rejected five times by three different courts, I’ve almost gotten used to bouncing back from the feeling of helplessness.

Sharjeel was immensely talented. He could have lived a comfortable life as a top software professional abroad, but he chose to return to India for his people. He pursued a PhD on Indian Muslims after Independence, spoke for a marginalized community, and organized protests against unjust laws. For this, he has been in jail for the last six years, simply for protesting.

Piketty’s fans retort by saying (as mainstreamers always do) that the contribution lies in the “novel data” and cute econometrics. Can we imagine another science in which an “empirical” practitioner fails to MENTION the theorist who discovered the concept?

The issue here is that when one is empirically testing another scholars theoretical ideas one must at least have the courtesy of citing them. Is Samir Amin and Emmanuel in the citations? Imagine an empirical physicist confirming the existence of the Higgs particle while not citing Higgs.

Oh look… Emmanuel and Samir Amin plagiarized Thomas Piketty’s idea 50 years before the latter came up with it.
