Orlando’s first team is not very good. The players they are utilizing to play big minutes aren’t producing.
This is a club that was very publicly embarrassed when Alex Freeman was finally allowed to play after years of many people saying he’s ready for first team minutes and then he puts up one of the best MLS fullback seasons ever.
You’d think that maybe they’d learn their lesson that some of these kids are really good and they need to start finding the next Freeman to give their mediocre team (just what the results say) a jolt.
Now obviously not every player is Alex Freeman. I wouldn’t dare pretend otherwise, but Ellis and Caraballo are absolute top talents. Two of the best in their age group in the country.
To me it’s a little hard to understand Aiden Hezarkhani is starting in MLS and Justin Ellis can’t even get on the field. Keep in mind Hezarkhani is helping RSL. He’s been a fair contributor. If RSL can get that out of Hezarkhani, surely Orlando should be able to get that out of Ellis?
Again, it’s hard to believe that MDS has been a fair contributor for RBNY and Caraballo hasn’t played for Orlando? That’s no insult to MDS. That’s an insult to how Orlando has utilized one of the best 08’s in the country.
We could go beyond just these two. Why is Nolan Miller MLS capable out of the draft but Thomas Williams isn’t? USSF is calling in Williams to US U-23 camps amongst ‘04 CB’s, not Miller. That’s nothing against Miller.
It tells you that Orlando really hasn’t been super friendly to their academy products trying to break in. It took Alex Freeman at age 20 (at least a full year after he was ready) tearing the hinges off the door and telling them he’s the real captain now for Orlando to give anyone a chance.
Further, they got a reduced fee for Freeman precisely due to how they handled him poorly. He has a breakout season right before the offseason he had to be sold. If they let him play the year before, they’d have doubled their fee.
Why exactly should I believe Griffin Dorsey is better than Zakaria Taifi? Taifi was one of the best RB’s in MLSNP last season. Seems like they had a Freeman replacement in house and dumpster dived for an MLS journeyman instead.
Of course there’s also Colin Guske and Tahir Reid Brown and Dylan Judelson and it goes on and on. There’s a lot of talent Orlando has on the verge of their first team.
They need to commit to giving more of these players opportunities. The first team is bad in its current form. The veterans aren’t producing. They have the reserve team coach now coaching the first team. Time is now. Orlando you’re on the clock. You are expected to start playing these kids more regularly. Worst case scenario they don’t produce and only get experience.
Currently the veterans aren’t producing and don’t have upside. If you’re gonna lose, lose playing your kids. Orlando has one of the best crops in MLS and currently they’re losing with none of them playing. Has to, has to, change.
