anthropic disabled fable 5 for everyone 4 days ago and the reason is pretty serious. it was reported that the U.S. government issued an export control directive citing national security. the implication > they're treating Fable 5 (and Mythos 5) as sensitive technology, on the level of high end chips (assumed dangerous) > they prohibit access to any "foreign national," whether inside or outside the U.S. > this includes even foreign employees of Anthropic itself the problem with this is: in order for anthropic to comply with the order, they'd have to verify the nationality of each user one by one. which as you could've guessed is impossible. so they made the drastic decision: → SHUT DOWN FABLE 5 AND MYTHOS 5 FOR EVERYONE, WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT while the rest of Claude's models continue to function normally (including Opus 4.8). Is it permanent? according to Anthropic's official statement: “we believe it's a misunderstanding and we're working to restore access as soon as possible.” the backstory: - rhe order arrived at 5:21pm ET on Friday, signed by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. - the letter didn't explain the specific national security reason. likely trigger: - another company claimed to have found a method to "jailbreak" Fable 5 - that set off alarms in the administration and just like that, few days after launching the most anticipated model of the year, it got shut down
