One of two wildfires threatening Jasper surged into the historic resort town on Wednesday, engulfing homes and businesses in a wall of flames. Fueled by fierce winds, the wildfire escalated into a firestorm, with plumes of ash and towering flames reaching hundreds of feet into the sky. The intense behavior of the fire, which saw flames reaching 300 to 400 feet and spreading at about 15 meters per minute, led to the loss of numerous buildings in Jasper National Park’s historic townsite.
While the full extent of the damage remains unclear, park officials reported significant losses. Efforts to save buildings were ongoing, with critical infrastructure such as the wastewater treatment plant, hospital, communications facilities, and the Trans Mountain Pipeline at risk.
Jasper faced threats from both the north and south, prompting mandatory evacuations on Monday that displaced up to 25,000 residents and visitors. The northern fire, initially spotted five kilometers from Jasper, continued to advance, while the southern fire, reported eight kilometers out, reached the town’s outskirts within hours. As conditions worsened, firefighting efforts, including water bombing and constructing fireguards, were hampered by dangerous conditions and failed attempts to reroute the fire. By the time the flames reached the townsite, the battle became insurmountable despite extensive ground and aerial resources. First responders were eventually forced to retreat, leaving only structural firefighters with personal respirators.
Jasper and Jasper National Park are treasures for the world … and they’re a special haven for those of us lucky enough to live close by. What’s happening tonight breaks my heart. Prayers for those displaced by the fire and heartfelt thanks to those fighting it. #JasperFire
The #Jasper situation is bleak this hour but word is they are not giving up. Here are some firefighters headed to town just now to try to save it. More are on the way soon, I’m told. The blaze is on Jasper’s doorstep right now. #yeg#abfire
