“In so far as any man has the remains of indwelling sin in him, he has opposition to holiness within him. We heard a minister say not long since that ‘he found something in himself that kicks against holiness.’ We did not doubt it, carnal nature always ‘kicks against holiness.’ When men are opposed to holiness it is because holiness is opposed to them.” — John Allen Wood

@ShaneRaynor Absolutely. Also, if you haven't already, look into Asbury Lowrey and his book The Possibilities of Grace. It's an incredible book.

@BKJulien524 He’s wonderful! And he’s made me aware of so many other classic Methodist authors I’d never read before and have now acquired their books.

Lovick Pierce (a 19th century Methodist pastor) said at a General Conference that “the desire of entire sanctification is dying out in the Church, because the grade of religion our people have been running upon is below the level where sanctification begins.”

@OmniaMethodist @Methodist_Prime Also, entire sanctification does not mean gradual sanctification doesn’t continue afterward. We will grow in grace through eternity (perfecting perfection!)

This verse illustrates our ongoing need for the atonement of Jesus. Entire sanctification does not mean a person will automatically never sin again. Wesley avoided teaching an absolute perfection. I think he did, however, use this verse (and the surrounding passage) to argue that it is possible be cleansed and free from all sin in this life… and he taught that while we’re declared not guilty when we’re justified, entire sanctification is when God eradicates the root of the sin… the depravity… original sin. What a weight off of us! But we can still be tempted (as Jesus and pre-fall Adam could), and it is still possible for us to sin willfully or out of ignorance.

The 1855 catechism of the Methodist Episcopal Church defines entire sanctification this way: the state of being entirely cleansed from sin, so as to love God with all our heart and mind, and soul and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves.”

Over 175 teenagers received Jesus after hearing the gospel during two afternoon events across the street from a high school in our community this week. Today, we’re having a family carnival in a parking lot on a busy corner. These are not preaching events; they are groups of small teams (2-3 people) sharing the gospel with individuals and other small groups. Now comes the next step: follow-up and discipleship. God is good. Teenagers, from what we’re seeing, are very open to hearing the gospel right now and want to know more about Jesus.

One of the big lightbulb moments for me regarding entire sanctification was this: How can I love God with all my heart if indwelling sin is there?

For those wondering how we did this: we got the blessing from the school to set up tables on the public sidewalk (not school property) and we bought 40 pizzas each day. Students (not teachers) shared invitations with their friends. We were very transparent from start to finish that this was a church-sponsored evangelism event. We did not use bait-and switch techniques and did not require anyone to listen to a presentation to get pizza. They were able to take pizza and walk away with no pressure. But most of them wanted to know more about why we were there and asked!

Our church did an outreach event across the street from a high school this afternoon and 140 students heard the gospel and received Jesus!
