Not only should the HEC immediately withdraw its letter but it should also issue a public apology to all students practicing the Hindu faith for terming celebration of #Holi as tarnishing image of Pakistan. The advisory issued by HEC is not only derogatory to beliefs of Hindu Pakistanis but it is also in violation of the constitution. I don't have to quote the 11th August Speech of Quaid e Azam or refer to the dreams of the founders of Pakistan and their many contradictions. We are now governed by the 1973 Constitution which was unanimously adopted by the Parliament. Art 20 gives freedom to profess, practice and propagate one's religion. Art 21 gives protection against being forced to participate in another religion's ceremony. I don't think any non hindu student playing with colors and dancing during Holi festivities was forced to do so. Like any democracy it is the burden of the majority to uphold the Constitution and the freedoms it guarantees. It is for the majority to show tolerance and ensure a pluralistic society. Peace and tolerance aren't exhibited at a societal level when religious minorities participate in religious festivities of the majority. It is exhibited when the majority shows respects, protects and cherishes the diversity in society and ensures that every citizen regardless of their caste creed or faith feel empowered and secure like an equal citizen. We are a country where nearly 97% population is Muslim. There is at least one mosque if not more at every km. There is a board for religious education of every sect. Allah is sovereign and all laws are to abide by injunctions of Islam. So Islam isn't in danger in Pakistan due to celebrating Holi or Christmas once a year. The real dangers to Islam in our land is the tyranny, lawlessness and oppression on the poor and the marginalized. Which Islam allows enforced disappearances, displacing the poor from their homes, land grabbing, fake encounters and corruption. Those who use religion as a political tool never really want to talk about the real issues such as Haqooq ul Ibad because they themselves have no conviction. They use Islam for cosmetics, their politics like their conviction is superficial. It is their politics which is danger whenever we take a step towards becoming a more tolerant and diverse society. As a society we are to live our life by the constitution. We have a comprehensive judicial system and even the Federal Shariah Courts to ensure all laws comply with the injunctions of Islam. We are not to regulate our lives as a society by the dictates of any Fatwa or religious decree independently issued by a scholar or a pressure group. dawn.com/news/1760952/h…
