I’m writing this unable to open my mouth. So no Wispr Flow and all that. 5-6 sutures. Half a wisdom tooth still in my jaw. The dentist said 2 hours. 4 hours later, only half was out. I could hear his stomach grumbling. I tapped out. Told the man I’d rather go home with half a tooth in my jaw than let a hungry surgeon chisel through the rest. I’m 33. This is my third wisdom tooth extraction. I have history with these things. None of it dignified. I’ve got bad genes when it comes to teeth. It’s not like I hate dentists — we’re co-dependent at this point. I joke with mine that I’ve had him on a retainer for years — without ever using one. He doesn’t laugh anymore. The first extraction was in Porto. 2016. I was 23. First time abroad, bright-eyed, ready to take on Europe. Day 4, my lower jaw started killing me. I thought it was a gum infection. Found a clinic. Explained “gum pain, lower jaw” through Google Translate. The doctor nodded, looked around my mouth, and tapped on my upper wisdom tooth. I was like — wait, that tooth is fine?? She mumbled something in Portuguese I didn’t catch. But I was 23, in pain, in a foreign country, so I did what anyone would do. Nodded and gave consent to a procedure I didn’t fully understand in a language I didn’t speak. She yanked the upper wisdom tooth. The gum pain went away. To this day I don’t know if she was a genius or if I got lucky. Told me to stick to liquids for a few days. So I walked into a supermarket, saw apricot juice for the first time in my life, thought “this looks healthy and exotic,” and drank a litre of it. Apricot juice is nature’s laxative. Spent the next day on the pot in my Porto apartment — jaw throbbing on one end, stomach revolting on the other — wondering what I’d done to deserve this. No ChatGPT in 2016. No Claude Code to debug my life choices. Just vibes and consequences. Second extraction — uneventful. Barely remember it. The middle child of my wisdom teeth story. Third one. Last Saturday. The impacted one. The one my dentist has been mentioning for years like a weather update. “Your lower left is impacted.” Cool. Doesn’t hurt. Moving on. Until it did. Got a CBCT scan done — basically a 3D X-ray of your jaw. Attaching it so you can see the chaos for yourself. Roots sideways. Teeth pressed into nerves. A red line tracing the inferior alveolar nerve, which if nicked means you lose feeling in half your face. Fun. The surgeon studied it like a mechanic studying a car that’s been “running fine” for years. “Should’ve done this earlier.” Doctor-speak for “you’re an idiot.” 4 hours in, half out. His stomach growling. Me unable to feel my face. I said bro I’m done. Went home with the job half-finished and enough sutures to qualify as embroidery. Now I can open my jaw roughly the width of a straw. It hurts to talk, eat, exist. We’ll finish this another day. I’ve had more life insights staring at dental clinic ceilings than I’ve ever had in showers, by the way. Just putting that out there. Two and a half teeth down. One and a half to go. The fourth — the final boss — is fully horizontal. They’ll have to cut through bone. I’m told this is “routine.” I’d rather die first, but knowing my genes, even my skeleton will need dental work. bye for now. I have to go pray for my twins to catch their mother’s genes when it comes to teeth.

I used to mop floors at a top university and solve problems left on the board at the end of class just for fun. I didn't realize that I had some sort of natural talent for math. One day, when I was solving the problem as usual, it turned out that it was a super-hard problem that no student had solved in that batch of students. A professor saw me doing that and pulled me into a world of elite academia and high-profile projects, where equations had price tags. After a few months, I was interviewing and cracking all the elite places...
