USA 🇺🇸 Good news for freedom of speech and a victory against the Trump administration’s authoritarian attempts to restrict press freedoms. A federal judge has blocked the Department of Defense recent policy on how journalists access the Pentagon, finding that it violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution. The policy, which was introduced in October (after defense secretary Pete Hegseth approved the new policy) prohibited journalists from soliciting information that the defense department didn’t directly provide, and revoked the credentials of any outlet that didn’t sign on & cut off access to any outlets or reporters whose coverage it didn’t like, violating constitutional free speech protections as outlined in the first amendment. The Pentagon assembled a new press corps consisting of pro-Trump outlets and media personalities. District Judge Paul L Friedman ruled in favour of The New York Times, which had sued the department after it enacted strict controls limiting information reporters can gather and publish from the Pentagon.
