Medgar Evers, who fought in #DDay and was the NAACP field secretary for Mississippi, was assassinated outside of his home hours after JFK's civil rights address in the early morning of June 12, 1963. People wrote to JFK about his speech and their anger at Evers' murder.

61 years ago today on June 11, 1963, President Kennedy addressed the nation on civil rights. He defined the civil rights crisis as moral, as well as constitutional and legal, and announced that he would submit civil rights legislation to Congress. jfklibrary.org/learn/about-jf…
