I think the meaning of being "into yuri" has changed. Back in the 2000s actual yuri anime or manga was very rare/niche, especially English-translated ones. So being "into yuri," at least for the kind of otaku OP is referring to, wasn't about reading Aoi Hana, it was about liking

4chan was already full of dudebros back then. But they were easily into yuri and never against it.
