Our eldest Khalid Mateen was a father like brother. He joined army at the age of 17 and provided us the opportunity to live our lives. No wonder we all became journalists which synchronised with our Awaara habits, political activism and what not. And then there was kid brother called Gudda who was there to kick around for all the chores not just by us but all our friends most of whom chose to become journalist. When Hussain Naqi sb took him under his wings when he led The News in Lahore -against my wishes btw- he became Naqi Sb’s boy. He had the gift of endearing colleagues who might be the best of our industry-Kamila Hyat the kindest heart; Saadia Salahuddin the Bhagwan, Nazish the self declared mom; Farah Zia the big sister whom he always teased as blood sister as he donated blood and to her sister Iram once. His favourite gang included @aaliaaaliya , Bushra, Fauzia, Tahira Habib. His dilemma was that he was gudda to all of them which mostly translated as errand boy or the chief trouble shooter. Not just to these self imposed big sisters and moms but to lots of big brothers (friends of elderly Mateens) as @ashamim123 @ranajawad, @HamidMirPAK Ashar Rehman, Imran Munir just to name a few. Even when he was chief news editor of the paper he was always treated as Gudda. The Gudda of Press Club who was known as “the friend of friends.” Always stood by the weaker lot and no bully in town could scare him. Great thing about him was that he played that role. Always gladly. Even enjoyed it. Even to the last. So Gudda is gone. We miss him as do so many of his comrades in Lahore, Islamabad and else where. Good bye Gudda ji!!
