Really good example here of the perils of consultations. @bankofengland have learnt the lesson here that many political parties have learnt: what polls well in theory can often fall apart when public are confronted with the implications of that choice.

I am baffled as to why consistently behaving like a total prat is regarded as a sensible election strategy. I’ve never seen the thinking behind it explained The Lib Dems have more MPs than they’ve had for a long time. It’s a solid base on which to build, especially given Labour’s woes. But this is not the way to do it.

It is recognised that a minimum of 13 Post Masters committed suicide as a result of the Post Office scandal. This man has no shame and should not be in public office

Former hobbits. If you have ever considered returning to Palantir, this is the week to do it. The world is demanding every last unit of creative energy we can muster. If you return, you will be on a plane day one and committing code that matters within hours of getting your laptop. From the foxhole to the factory floor the surface area to support something incredibly meaningful, immediately, is immense. I promise you nothing other than the sense of satisfaction that comes from the purpose and intensity of the most intense deployments you ever worked on. If you have been chasing that spark, come find it again. The shire is calling.

"Yes, I suppose the news should just be a dispassionate list of all the events that have occurred the world over during the day. That would be good. Except of course, it would take forever!"

Keir Starmer in 2020. “Hear me out: I had 8,000 staff for five years as the Director of Public Prosecutions… When they made mistakes, I carried the can. I never turn on my staff & you should never turn on your staff. I will carry the can for mistakes of any organisation I lead.”

Government source: “In a no10 devoid of taking responsibility for either mistakes or even for decisions, the departure of Morgan, who was excellent at both, is a very worrying development.” Dangerous appraisal of the centre’s operation going forward…

RT @Peston: The problem for Keir Starmer caused by McSweeney’s resignation is that the ex chief of staff says explicitly it is appropriate…

The PM's meat shield is gone. And now supporters and detractors of the PM will have no one else to blame, and no where else to go, than looking at the man himself. Recent political history with May and Johnson shows changing the chief of staff doesn't change the person.
Robert Peston@Peston

Morgan McSweeney’s resignation statement “After careful reflection, I have decided to resign from the government. The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and trust in politics itself. When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice. In public life responsibility must be owned when it matters most, not just when it is most convenient. In the circumstances, the only honourable course is to step aside. This has not been an easy decision. Much has been written and said about me over the years but my motivations have always been simple: I have worked every day to elect and support a government that puts the lives of ordinary people first and leads us to a better future for our great country. Only a Labour government will do that. I leave with pride in all we have achieved mixed with regret at the circumstances of my departure. But I have always believed there are moments when you must accept your responsibility and step aside for the bigger cause. As I leave I have two further reflections: Firstly, and most importantly, we must remember the women and girls whose lives were ruined by Jeffrey Epstein and whose voices went unheard for far too long. Secondly, while I did not oversee the due diligence and vetting process, I believe that process must now be fundamentally overhauled. This cannot simply be a gesture but a safeguard for the future. I remain fully supportive of the Prime Minister. He is working every day to rebuild trust, restore standards and serve the country. I will continue to back that mission in whatever way I can. It has been the honour of my life to serve.”

Is the government’s position now really that national security vetting can be defeated by someone telling a lie?
