So, this was my day today… Today the House advanced HB3660, a bill to legalize the use of composted human bodies as fertilizer. If this bill is put into law, Oklahoma joins 14 BLUE states that have legalized this process. So, instead of outlawing this type of practice outright, we’re on track to take the use of humanure as fertilizer another disgusting step forward. 🤢

Today, I debated against SB2, the wind turbine setback bill. The language and setback distances we sent the Senate a year ago at the end of last session were mostly okay, with the key ingredient of allowing counties the ability to have a voice in defining the setback distances that are best for them. However, the Senate just fed us a garbage bill that not only reduced the setback distances we originally proposed, but also completely eliminated the county option/local control component. This bill is exactly what the wind industry wanted, which would have statutorily codified the ability for them to keep doing what they’re already doing - putting 700’ industrial machines too close to other properties and homes. The Senate passed the bill with 31 Ayes to 16 Nays, however, the House killed the bill with 20 Ayes to 67 Nays (pictures of the chamber votes in comments.) I want to thank my House colleagues who voted NO on this bill. We will be back next year to get what the People want, and stop this perpetual rolling-over for the wind industry. #okleg

🚨GRASSROOTS VICTORY🎉 @GovStitt saw the human composting bill (HB 3660) for what it is, an attack on human dignity. I’m grateful for his veto, and stand ready to vote against any attempt to override. Thank you to the many grassroots voters who stood together to fight this bill. Thank you to all of the conservative outlets who spread the word about this insanity. I wish it hadn’t gotten this far, but it is stopped for now!

@ShawForOK @RMConservative “For instance, the bill would prevent an emancipated minor who has been deemed competent to act as an adult from being able to get married.” Please show me this in the bill. I believe an emancipated minor would be able to get married.

Two days ago, a bill was raised on the House floor which represented a very difficult vote for me and many of my colleagues. 36 of us (all Republicans) voted against SB 504, a bill to prohibit any minor under the age of 18 from being married in the state of Oklahoma. Although this bill was authored by a “Republican”, 6 Democrats were the only co-authors on the bill, and all the Democrat members celebrated the passage of the bill. Those of us who voted against the bill (the vast majority of the conservative contingent in the House) strongly support the protection of children from sexual predators. And I absolutely do not support children being married to adults with or without parental consent. Current law allows 16- or 17-year-olds to get married with parental consent. The disagreement for many of us on this bill was in the lack of consideration that the bill took for unique circumstances in which young people may find themselves. For instance, the bill would prevent an emancipated minor who has been deemed competent to act as an adult from being able to get married. In the case of teen pregnancy where two minor parents are involved, this law would strictly prohibit them from being able to get married and raise that child together, leaving the mother without the legal, spiritual, and emotional support that marriage can provide. One legislator had a constituent reach out with personal stories about how this bill would have negatively impacted his own children. He shared that his, “oldest daughter got married at 17 with [his] consent. She was leaving for college, and she did not turn 18 until 2 days after school started. By allowing her to get married in June and not waiting until her birthday in August the couple were able to obtain affordable married housing on campus. Today, they have been married 14 years and have two beautiful kids.” Similar situations arise in cases where young men are graduating high school and heading into the military prior to their 18th birthday. If killed in combat while unmarried, the mother of that service-member’s children would be denied military survivor benefits available to spouses. If the current exceptions in our laws were providing loopholes for illicit activity to occur, we should be looking to reform those exceptions to prevent, to the best of our ability, that illicit activity to continue. We should not be eliminating all exceptions altogether. Due to those nuances, and the many problems with this legislation, I voted against it. As always, I welcome any questions or feedback from my constituents and am grateful for your trust and support.

@evie10151 No- the bill would have prohibited parents from being able to provide consent in these cases. This was an outright ban with zero exceptions allowed.

@ShawForOK The couple who wanted housing access- parents could have still signed consent. Parental consent needed to join the military prior to 18, so they could consent to marriage as well. This is some exceptional cartwheels to justify not protecting girls.

@ShawForOK @Eamon_USA I don’t see the problem with letting someone choose to have their remains composted instead of cremated or buried. What happens with that compost after should be treated the same as cremated ashes but why is this such an issue?

Today, a narrow majority of Republican State Reps spit in the faces of decent Oklahomans and voted to legalize the composting and commodification of human bodies in Oklahoma. Here’s my debate against. If your Rep voted for this, it might be worth keeping in mind in the upcoming primary season. “If we start blurring the lines between dignity and utility, you do it first in death, then eventually you start doing it in life. Every regime that has treated human beings as raw material, whether it was for labor or experimentation or disposal, began that same quiet shift into darkness. A person becomes secondary, the system becomes primary.” - Glenn Beck on HB3660 being heard in the state of Oklahoma #okleg
