Construction relies on constant innovation to create spaces that meet the evolving needs of our cities and communities. At Shawmut, our 1,500 employee-owners embrace our culture of continuous learning, finding ways to bring innovative solutions and lessons learned from one jobsite to the next to deliver an unparalleled building experience for our clients no matter where we’re building.
Our Center of Excellence (COE), led by subject-matter experts, drives this work by piloting new technologies and construction approaches, connecting teams across regions to share success stories, and embedding best practices into all of our projects.
This month, we spoke with COE leaders—director of sustainability Elizabeth Murphy, national director of lean Jessica Spivey, and director of virtual design and construction Mohamed Aboulezz—to learn how they drive excellence across Shawmut.

We provided the @BosBizJournal an exclusive first look inside the Goel Center for Creativity & Performance, the new home of the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University, as construction enters its final stretch.
Designed to foster groundbreaking performance, teaching, and public gathering, the Goel Center brings together highly flexible theaters, rehearsal and production spaces, and welcoming public areas that extend performance beyond the stage and into daily life. Its adaptable architecture and mass timber structure reflect a new model for cultural venues—pairing innovative design with regenerative sustainability strategies to create an inclusive space that supports evolving artistic practice while strengthening Harvard’s growing hub of innovation in Allston.
As Shawmut Senior Project Manager Dan Ryan notes in the piece, “This mass timber building is totally different than most of what you see. This particular project is unique.”

The renovation of The Benjamin Royal Sonesta New York reimagined the historic landmarked hotel, creating new public spaces, a redesigned lobby, and 209 residential-style guestrooms and suites, including the historically recognized Benjamin Suite and the introduction of the new Beverly Suite. The goal of the renovation was to maintain the luxury hotel’s classic identity as it joined the Royal Sonesta brand while adding contemporary details and technology to enhance the guest experience.
The hotel remained operational throughout the entire renovation, so our team developed a carefully phased work plan that kept occupancy intact, with extensive pre-planning and coordination with our safety team to ensure the health and safety of all guests and staff.
🔗 Hotels ByDesign got a behind-the-scenes tour before the renovation completed—watch the episode below and find out more about our work on the project here: shawmut.com/project/the-be…#ShawmutBuilt

This year’s Women in Construction Week theme, “Level Up. Build Strong,” champions the women leading with conviction, advancing innovation, and building pathways for others to make a deep impact in our industry.
No success is possible without a community that supports professional development. That’s why we asked some of our women employee-owners to share their journeys to construction, their advice for other women growing their careers in the built environment, the skills most integral to their success, and what they find most valuable about their work.
