In 1942, at age of 19, Red Schoendienst hitchhiked to St. Louis from Germantown, Illinois for a tryout at Sportsman's Park. His skills at all infield positions impressed the scouts enough to convince the team to sign him to their farm system. Three years later, the switch-hitter was on the Cardinals professional roster. Red spent a remarkable 67 out of his 76 years in baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals, encompassing roles as a player, coach, and manager and the ultimate goodwill ambassador.
