(I read a novel where someone did that, it was super obvious, and the reviews said so.) Though there are ways to cannibalize original elements for original works.

This might be hard to believe, but In Japan, you can't just "start dating" someone. There is a formal confession. Called "kokuhaku." You say "I like you. Please go out with me." Out loud. To their face. If they say yes, you are now officially dating. Not before. There is no "so… what are we?" phase. Japan skipped it. With a system.
