@shagbark_hick @TheSoulExists It is unhealthy for human development. Knowing how children develop is good content for any parent. Strong engaged parenting is based on giving the child what they need to thrive in life.

I mean, my biggest takeaway from becoming a father so far is that "we live in a society." Nowhere is this more true than when you have kids. Just me and my wife? We could hide out, disengage from society, do our own thing. But with kids, they're going to want friends. I watch my wife's family hide their kids away from the world, prevent them from speaking to outsiders, they're incredibly sheltered and frustrated -- it's not ideal. We're not interested in doing that to our kids. I'd rather run a few risks and ultimately raise kids with a cosmopolitan sensibility than do the "lockdown on the family compound" thing. To me, the best option would be a really orthodox Catholic school, or a group homeschool with other like-minded Catholic families. If we do homeschool, we'll probably move to a more populated place where there will be other Catholic kids around. The isolation thing just seems... unhealthy.

Look, pro-homeschooling people are piling on this guy but he's not wrong at all. I know of families who are straight-up failing to teach their children beyond a 2nd-grade education. Like 16-year-old kids who don't know what the Capital of the US is, have never heard of Toronto, and could not perform a basic algebra problem. While it's true that there are many excellent homeschooling families whose instruction far exceeds that of any public school, the fact is that the American system of "school your kids however you want" does also yield a lot of severely stunted kids who get stuck playing "catch-up" for the rest of their lives. My wife was homeschooled, we might homeschool, I'm not averse to the practice per se, but it's a fact that there's a whole world of multi-generational homeschoolers who are not and will not rise above a 2nd or 3rd grade education level by their own volition. Should the state intervene in these cases? I dunno, the answer to the question is not as "easy" as many make it out to be. The idea of barely getting through 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' at the age of 16 should be appalling, and it IS happening in some American homeschooler families.

Do Homeschool kids just like, not have to take tests or exams or get grades? How does the government know if the child is actually getting an education and not just like, being neglected

This teacher says what schools won’t tell you. Unless your child is in advanced content or lucky enough not to be in an inclusion class, the rigor of general education has disappeared in favor of the special education students. I do not blame the teachers for this. I do not blame the special education students for this. No one benefits. How long will we keep this charade going?

Teacher says there's no longer a difference between special education & general education. He says every teacher is special ed now, what with all the IEPs and 504s. My 2¢: the overly inclusive model is unfair to everyone involved!

If “abortion is murder,” then a child dying because their parents refused vaccines is one of those “after-birth abortions” they won’t shut up about.

@wtflanksteak I am tutoring 4th & 5th graders in CA- they know phonics and can sound out words they don’t know. We help them understand and use those words. In Omaha, they didn’t teach phonics and I met college students who couldn’t spell. Consistency would help.

I think the scariest thing in that video of the high school kids trying to read that index card is that they can't sound words out, completely skip words they don't know, and bail entirely when they hit a word they don't know! I know how reading education changed but still sad!
