This whole argument that children are too expensive is pathetic. I was homeless and penniless when I found out I was pregnant. I had been on drugs since the age of 13 (I was 25 when I got pregnant). Up to that point, I didn’t care if I lived or died. The moment I knew I was pregnant, I quit the drugs (32 years sober now). I was already in love with my baby and for the first time in my life, I wanted to live. I told the dad he could quit the drugs as well and leave with me or he would probably never see me (or his future kiddo) again. He quit. We got married. He got a job. I stayed home and raised our sons (three in all). We made it work from NOTHING. On ONE INCOME. I went without the meaningless luxuries like nice nails, new clothes, $5 cups of coffee. I didn’t care. For one thing, I never had those luxuries so I didn’t miss them, but more important, I was home raising my boys and their dad was earning enough to keep us afloat. Now my boys are adults and functioning members of society (none of them ever touched drugs) and I can afford those little extras. My point is, you CAN afford children if you make the appropriate sacrifices, and honestly you’re sacrificing the trivial for the precious. It’s 100% worth it and you CAN do it.

People who don’t have kids are shocked by this but babies and toddlers usually love tinned sardines, shellfish, etc. The only “healthy” thing they have a notable universal aversion to are bitter brassicas like broccoli and kale which we’ve been propagandized into thinking are nutritional powerhouses and which in reality don’t do much besides stress out your digestion. It really makes you consider the possibility that most toddlers, having nearly unmediated access to the immediate sensory experience of food, have a better understanding of what they should be eating than we do.
