Little desert, well whats left of it, turning on the magic. Noticeable difficulty in finding orchids on the burnt stuff, but did find one.

@TrengoveSam @janadixon_ When we get wet Augusts we lose crop comp and the ARG takes over. The Voraxor 200ml treatments are controlling 55-65 plants/m so I was trying calculate the return.

@Sheldon_Hancock @janadixon_ This one from 2008, 2kg/ha yield loss per ryegrass panicle vs 8kg/ha/panicle in your results. Yours is nearly double the yield potential though, so I’m guessing your ryegrass would have been more competitive than ours in a dryer year.

@Sheldon_Hancock Great thanks Adam. The link to the paper would be handy! Seems pretty reasonable about 6% yield loss per 50 panicle/m2, or 0.12% per 1 panicle/m2. I know the UofA led HRZ ryegrass work quoted 0.3% yield loss per ryegrass plant.

The BigRed is a postcard picture variety. Less heads/m than we aimed for but more grains / head -  average daily temp during total grain fill days so far is 13.72deg 👌

We'd like to hear from legume growers across Australia about inoculation practice to help us design relevant research. Should take 15 minutes or so; and we'll send out GRDC guides to inoculation to interested participants. Please share/retweet. Thankyou!

@Dan_Feder88 @Sheldon_Hancock @agrobaz @MartinMurray_Ag Not to mention some pretty toxic chemicals used on the sheep side of the business in the old potato growing regions.... Dad always talks of plunge dipping sheep in dildren and the odd operator ending up in the dip with the sheep

Bizarre that farmers mentioned unsafe handling and or use of chemicals in the early days but didn’t mention what chemicals were used systematically. Being potatoes growers id assume serious fungicide and insecticide use why not point the finger at that? Why specifically Paraquat?
Louise Milligan@Milliganreports

Excellent work investigating possible links between the chemical paraquat and the devastating burden of Parkinson’s disease in farming communities, by Andy Burns, @CharlotteKing88 and the hard-working team at ABC Regional Investigations. abc.net.au/news/2024-08-3…

@Dan_Feder88 @agrobaz @MartinMurray_Ag I think there’s a number of practices similar to flagging down crop dusters done in that era, 60 years ago dad used to get inside the grain storage during filling and push the grain to the sides while it was being treated with now discontinued insecticides.

@agrobaz @MartinMurray_Ag Absolutely mate that’s my concern. Not trying to say the famers claims are disingenuous. Just need more context of historical chem use. The farmers getting drenched by crop dusters isn’t sensationalized it happened but likely was for insects or fungus so why link to Paraquat?

@sabbott02 @lingy_smith Stoddard published a paper on the Limits to Retention of Fertilized Flowers in Faba Beans. TLDR once a flower opens the adjacent leafs have 4 days to acclimate enough radiation from available light. Your beans look crowded and sun blocked by a tall fence 🤷‍♂️

I need a beans agronomist. Massive vegetative growth, lots of flowers and bees but the flowers fall off and no pods form. Soil pH is neutral to alkaline.

@AshlinRodman43 Yes, and no. The cereals and canola look great at the moment, beans catching up. But our weather stats aren’t great. As usual it all comes down to the spring 🤞

@Sheldon_Hancock @PbiCobbitty @TaraGarrard I certainly didn’t bring it to SA 😉 Looks like it’s moving rapidly across southern region, with weather being kind and crops still at early stages, controlling stripe rust early would be good 👍 @GRDCSouth
