In 2009 I tried to take my own life because of child sex*ual abu*se. Most people saw ‘mental illness’ and only a few knew the real reason. One person, a good friend, listened to me when I disclosed CSA within the family. She said the ‘right things’ and promised she wouldn’t treat me any differently, and then proceeded to do exactly that. The friendship gradually ended and I was left feeling ashamed and regretful that I’d spoken out. Today that same friend crossed the road when she saw me coming and I felt no more hurt, no anger… just sadness that so many survivors face discrimination for being victims of a crime. Because of the discomfort of others. She was the first, but wouldn’t be the last. #CSA #Disclosure

@HelenBevan @iafor perhaps this is how we encourage students to care as global citizens - show them we care about what matters to them? And that they matter to us?

"Mattering" is the belief that we’re significant to the world around us. When people feel they matter, they feel seen, important & needed through how others treat them. Scholars have deemed mattering to be a core instinct that drives all human behaviour.
