Pope Francis had tendency to bonhomie with some really dubious leftist figures because he thought they did good on homelessness or whatever. Still, the Pope has to meet people.

The VP errs here. JWT doesn’t claim that God is on the side of anyone engaged in belligerent actions. In fact, it’s premised by the idea that war is never in itself a good. Rather, what is happening in JWT is an attempt to preserve as much good as possible in a bad situation.

I wasn't thinking of the hierarchy failing in its duties like that, but all these regular eruptions because some Nasty Political Figure got to meet the Pope or whatever are ridiculous. For example, the Pope meeting Axelrod is not comparable.

Still, that falls under jurisdiction of priests giving out the communion and bishops who bear the responsibility. But I take issue with Americans reducing Vatican taking stances to internal US politics

They make up the overwhelming majority of the world population. If Vatican simply denied access to sinners on e.g. life issues it would lose influence it values.🤷‍♂️

A Catholic may disagree with the pope on whether a particular war meets just war criteria--that’s not the issue. The issue is rejecting just war principles or expressing that disagreement with a complete lack of filial piety and respect.

It's the kind of certainty you have to have of man's guilt for having death penalty applied to him. War being "possibly" just or merely "probably" just (in merely 51-to-49 sense) doesn't cut it.

@M_22154 I think it should be read as aspirational speech. I have dim view of Islam myself, but it is true centuries of history in Islamic world do offer concrete and long-lasting examples of peaceful coexistence as well, which is the only option for Catholics in Algeria anyhow.

This is what I mean about being passive aggressive. Of course it was directed at us. The pope may need to pretend for diplomatic purposes, but we don't need to. And yes, I think that allowing a fanatical regime which has spread terrorism throughout the region to have nuclear weapons *might* require more consideration than "war is bad, ok man". The pope doesn't need or want the responsibility to make that call. We do. But again, I'm more than happy to pull back to fortress America and let you assholes figure this out yourselves.

@seanparoski We Finns never outsourced our defence to the USA and now Euro-NATO is increasingly forced to plan its defence without US involvement anyway. As lifelong (deluded?) pro-US Atlanticist guy I think it's shame things have come to this, but USA under Trump just isn't reliable.
