Day two of the Globe Summit, and I had the best assignment — moderating a morning discussion about their editorial series, Bold Types, which profiles leaders in Boston’s business community. Also, did you know that women run all of Boston’s major media companies? The next discussion featured Boston Globe Media and Boston Magazine.

In journalism, “We regret the error” is sacred. But when it comes to progress, that mindset can become a trap. At #BusinessofLocal last week, we talked about experimentation in local media — and why it’s still so hard. Part of it is cultural. Newsrooms are trained to avoid mistakes. But to build the future of local journalism, we need to experiment more. Done right, experimentation doesn’t weaken trust — it strengthens it by showing we’re listening, learning, and improving. And it doesn’t have to be expensive: A/B tests, pop-up newsletters, small social pilots.

Finally made it to the Mather Symposium in Atlanta — a gathering of local and regional news leaders. A few takeaways: • News alone won’t convert or retain subscribers — useful lifestyle information is the next frontier. • Trust remains journalism’s biggest advantage over AI, especially in local news. • “Democracy” doesn’t sell in most business pitches. • With subscription growth slowing, there’s no silver bullet — revenue diversification is key. Highlight: a masterclass in panel moderation with the CEOs of Gannett, Advance Local and Mediahuis.
