One client got GST Notice based on FASTag data, and this time his accountant was just doing the back dated compliance! It is well known that the GST Department cross-verifies e-way bills with FASTag data to validate the genuineness of actual movement of goods. Recently, a client supplied goods from Gandhidham to a nearby location (about 15–20 km away). The vehicle reached late in the evening - so accountant was not there. and the goods were transported without an e-way bill, reached the destination late at night without any interception. After a week when accountant was checking the file, realised that ewaybill was missing. he prepared ewaybill entering the vehicle number - but that vehicle has taken another consignment to another state by then, completely on different route! The department questioned this - when the eway bill was generated, the vehicle was not in that region and was traveling on a different route, clearly indicating a suspicious billing transaction. I was exhausted trying to explain that it was just the accountant clearing backlog and maintaining records, though a clerical mistake, but not bogus transaction. One must be very careful, and one should prepare ewaybill only in real-time, and never prepare it lately just for the sake of compliance!
